Movies: Some Spoopy Season Recommendations

I know it's already mid-October, but Spooky Season is still in full swing! Here is a list of spoopy movies that I watched recently that I enjoyed, so y'all might like them too. Full disclosure, none of these are family-friendly. I would highly recommend not watching any of these with your kids unless it's under the Kid-Friendly or Teen-Friendly section of this post. Of course, that's just my opinion based on the content of these movies (e.g. nudity, violence, dismemberment, etc.).

If you like Killer Redneck slasher films, then you'll probably like House of 1,000 Corpses from Rob Zombie, House of Wax, and Butchers. All of these have essentially the same premise: teenagers killed by rednecks they accidentally crossed paths with. House of 1,000 Corpses and Butchers are available to stream on Amazon Prime, and House of Wax is available on HBO Max

If you're a sucker for a good monster movie, Frankenfish and Lake Placid are some classics that you'll definitely enjoy. Frankenfish is from the era when the Sci-Fi Channel took themselves seriously so circa 2005ish. Lake Placid is the reason I am terrified of alligators and crocodiles. My parents let me watch that at probably too young of an age. AND it stars the amazing Betty White. Unfortunately, I can't find any streaming services these are on, but I do know you can buy both from the Microsoft Store and Amazon.

If you like your Spoopy Season to be extra spoopy, Thirteen Ghosts is a cult classic for a reason. It stars the amazing Matthew Lillard and focuses on a house haunted by 13 ghosts. If you haven't seen it, you should. I never understood the hype behind it until I actually watched it. It's also available to stream on HBO Max. 30 Days of Night is another phenomenal movie, and it's available to stream on Hulu with a subscription. Great vampire movie and I highly recommend it. Another absolute classic is Lost Boys. It's the original teen vampire movie. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anywhere you could stream it but you can rent it from Amazon and the Microsoft store. Season of the Witch is another really good spoopy movie. Nicolas Cage and Ron Pearlman need to take a witch to be exorcised by monks. It takes place after the Crusades and is available to stream on Hulu with a premium subscription.

If you love horror movie tropes with a little comedy mixed in, Cabin in the Woods is a must-watch! It's the Airplane of horror movies. It plays up all the classic tropes, but I guarantee you'll get at least a laugh or two before the murdering begins. Another great one is What We Do in the Shadows. Both the movie and the TV series are available to stream on Hulu with a premium subscription. Taika Waititi is phenomenal in the movie and there are so many good jokes. Honestly, it's more of a vampire comedy than it is a horror flick.

If you enjoy cult movies, anything with Charles Manson is good, and there are several documentaries about the Branch Davidians on both Hulu and Netflix. Not to mention, a recent favorite of mine: Midsommar. Midsommar is available to stream on Amazon Prime. Another great one is a classic: Stephen King's Children of the Corn. I personally like the original better, but the remake is pretty decent as well. It's available to stream on Hulu and Amazon Prime.

If you like psychological thrillers about murderers, a couple of lesser-known ones are We Need to Talk about Kevin starring Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller, and M.O.M. (Mother of Monsters), which are both available to stream on Amazon Prime.

If you're looking for a good rape-revenge turned vigilante movie, M. F. A. is available to stream on Amazon Prime. One art student takes her trauma and uses it to get justice for other victims.

Kid-Friendly:

Hocus Pocus on Disney+

Corpse Bride on HBO Max

Halloweentown on Disney+

Teen-Friendly:

Lake Placid and Frankenfish are probably appropriate for older teens with parental supervision

What We Do in the Shadows is probably okay for teens with parental supervision. I honestly think they would appreciate the humor in the movie.

Lost Boys would probably be okay for older teens. The first time I saw it was when I was a senior in high school.
